Until I Get You by Claire Contreras

Until I Get You by Claire Contreras is a unique blend of college sports romance and dark mystery, which immediately drew me in.

The story follows Lachlan, a talented hockey player who is handsome and charming. Lyla, a reserved woman who prefers to stay out of the spotlight. Lachlan is immediately drawn to Lyla’s mysterious and elusive nature. This is a departure from the attention he is used to receiving from other women.

The first half of the book focuses on Lachlan and Lyla’s relationship in college, which spans only about 6 weeks’ timeline. We only get small little snap shots of their time together. This part of the book is filled with passion and fire.

The story jumps forward 3 years, when they are both out of college. Lachlan is still deeply in love with Lyla, and their reunion is full of tension and longing. But also an air of revenge.

“You captured my attention the moment I met you. I think I might have fallen in love with you that night, standing against that wall, without even realizing it.”

What sets this book apart is the dark mystery that surrounds Lyla’s past, which is slowly revealed throughout the story. While some parts of the book were difficult to read, the love between Lachlan and Lyla is fierce and unflinching, and their chemistry is explosive.

Claire Contreras has created a sports romance that is both sexy and filled with spice, while also dealing with deeper themes. The characters are well-developed, and Lachlan in particular stands out as a fiercely protective and loving partner.

I did struggle at times with the book, feeling very long and overly descriptive on the characters and their thoughts. Also, at times the author did not give us enough instead alludes to past moments or experiences.

Until I Get You is a great read for anyone looking for a unique sports romance with darker themes. I listened to the audiobook read by Joe Arden and Kasha Kensington. They bring these characters to life. This is an outstanding performance, and I would highly recommend the audiobook.
