Grim Tidings by B.K. Borison

A hauntingly romantic story about finding hope on the other side.

Grim Tidings is everything I love about B.K. Borison’s writing. She writes whimsical, haunting stories, and somehow I always end up desperate to protect the characters in them.

Darcy and Gabriel had my heart from the beginning. Their attraction is immediate, but once they realize exactly what the other is, everything becomes infinitely more complicated. A Grim Reaper and a Guardian Angel should be on opposite sides, yet watching these two slowly move past their assumptions and learn to trust each other was one of my favorite parts of the book. The push and pull between them had me hooked, but it’s the tenderness underneath it that really got to me. They become a safe place for each other in a world that asks far too much of both of them.

Characters Worth Protecting at All Costs

I especially loved Darcy. Her empathy and the weight she carries made it impossible not to feel for her, and I was completely invested in her struggle to reconcile who she is with who she wants to be. Borison takes the idea of death and turns it into something unexpectedly compassionate, exploring sacrifice and what it means to care deeply about another person. There’s a melancholy running through the story, but it never overwhelms the hope at its heart.

And then there are the little moments that made me fall even harder for this book—the bucket-list adventures, the banter, Fred and Nate, and of course Tater Tot. That tequila scene lives in my head rent-free. There’s so much warmth tucked into this strange little afterlife world, and it made me want to linger there.

The dedication got me all over again, and by the end, my heart was thoroughly wrecked in the best possible way. This book made me laugh and ache in equal measure and left me completely in love with Darcy and Gabriel. I’m officially all in on this series, and I cannot wait to see what B.K. Borison has waiting for us next.
