We met Ares Zervas in Brutal Collateral (Quinlin series) where he comes across aloof, rigid, ultra serious and at times dismissive. I always felt that there was more to Ares, the God of War. He is head of the American Greek Mafia…a title that he never anticipated and inherited after his brother’s death. Ares makes it pretty clear that he doesn’t do relationships, he has arrangements. He also keeps people at an arms length as his brother’s death impacted him a lot more than he would like it to or that he lets on. However, that is until he meets Lourdes in a club and quickly becomes obsessed with her. Then he finds out that she is married….that should stop him, right? Not this mafia boss he set his sights on her and will go to great lengths to get what he wants.
Lourdes may come across as meek but this woman is anything but. She is resilient, hard working, and very intelligent. She is stuck in a terrible marriage but is working hard in the background to get away. I really appreciated that when Ares set his sights on her she didn’t stop focusing on her end goal and didn’t take advantage of Ares’ power or money. She most definitely wants to be independent.
The way that each of them wormed their way into each other’s hearts when they were both trying their hardest to keep feelings at bay was just what I needed and it added to the angst…it also helped that they spent time in Greece where Ares let Lourdes see the true Ares. These two have explosive chemistry and I loved how Lourdes made Ares work for her heart and the right to call her his. These two balance one another so well- she gives him what he needs and in return he gives her the support, freedom and love that she wants.
If you love an over the top possessive obsessed mafia boss with a dirty mouth, an age gap, a strong heroine, and lots of mafia action this book is most definitely for you! I promise you that you will be craving what is next in this series…we only have to wait 61 days (yes, I checked….because I am THAT excited for book 2)!!!!
