Second First Dates was a complicated and heartfelt romance. Gabriella Gamez writes flawed, real characters so well. Even when they’re making choices that leave you wanting to shake them a little.

A Second Chance Worth Rooting For

Leti and Julian’s banter is one of the highlights of this book. Their second chance at a first date is such a fun setup. What really pulled me in was the slow burn and the way Julian has quietly thought about Leti for years. He sees her in a way that she isn’t always willing to see herself. Watching him continue to choose her was one of my favorite parts of the story.

Family, Complications, and Real Growth

Of course, things aren’t simple when your second chance romance involves your brother’s best friend and roommate. The tension between Leti, Julian, and Andrew adds another layer to the story, especially as Leti’s family dynamics come into focus. Gamez explores how our relationships with family can shape the walls we build. She also shows how difficult it can be to let someone truly care for us.

I also loved the way the queer representation was woven throughout the story. Leti and Julian’s experiences with attraction, intimacy, and relationships are handled with so much care. Their romance focuses on emotional connection and understanding rather than following a traditional path.

My Only Hesitation

While I loved watching Leti and Julian find their way back to each other, I did find myself wishing they could have worked through some of their misunderstandings sooner. I was so invested in them as a couple that I wanted to see them choose each other without some of the extra emotional hurdles along the way.

Second First Dates is a romance about letting yourself be seen, even when you’ve spent years building walls around the parts of yourself that feel hardest to share. Leti and Julian’s story is beautifully messy and full of the kind of complicated feelings that make a romance feel real.
