Gabriela and His Grace by Liana De la Rosa

Forced proximity, sizzling banter, and a historical romance with a fresh setting

The youngest Luna sister finally gets her story in Gabriela and His Grace, and it was worth the wait. Gabriela “Gabby” Luna Valdés is outspoken, sharp-witted, and unafraid to challenge both her family’s expectations and society’s rules. I loved how she holds her ground with Sebastian Brooks, Duke of Whitfield, and how much he clearly delights in being challenged by her. Their banter and chemistry spark from the beginning. The forced proximity aboard a ship from England to Mexico (and back again) gives them the perfect opportunity to realize just how much they have in common.

Sebastian is a bit of a rake, still struggling under the weight of his late father’s mismanagement. What made him stand out for me was how genuinely he admired Gabby’s intelligence and spirit. His defense of her, especially when it came to her father, was one of my favorite moments in the book. I also really enjoyed the dynamic between Gabby and her sisters, as well as Sebastian’s friendship with their husbands. It added a lot of warmth to the story without ever making me feel lost, even though I haven’t read the earlier books.

The historical backdrop, with its focus on Mexican politics and the Luna family’s heritage, felt fresh and engaging. I appreciated seeing a heroine so rooted in her culture, passionate about her country, and eager to make a difference.

If I had one quibble, it is that Sebastian’s secret holds on a little too long, and the resolution at the end felt a bit rushed compared to the slow burn leading up to it. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed this romance. The mix of adventure, history, family bonds, and a couple who truly respect one another made this a standout addition to the series.
