Rising West by Aly Stiles
“Rising West” by Ali Stiles is a quick and enjoyable read.
This is the first book by this author that I have read.
Mason West, a tortured single dad, is portrayed as a selfless and deserving character on the verge of stardom. His interactions with his adorable daughter, Brooklyn, showcase his dedication and his status as one of the good guys.
The introduction of Liberty as the band leader, after the previous lead singer abandoned both his bandmates and his lover, Liberty, adds a loud and crazy dynamic to the story. Although Liberty’s heart is in the right place, her bratty attitude and quick involvement with Mason felt slightly annoying and lacking in chemistry.
The pacing of the romance worked and made sense. The proximity of being bandmates and the connection between them fits well into this type of romance. The pacing of the storytelling however was a bit on the slower side. It did take a while to hook me and have me rooting for these characters.
The premise of the story is interesting, especially with the use of Mason’s late partner Katrina’s journal as a recurring element in the chapters. It provides insight into Mason’s life before he became a struggling roofer and his reasons for turning away from the allure of the stage.
Overall I would say a 3.5 star rating. I rounded up to 4. I struggled with the choice the author made in using the journal entries from the hero’s late fiancé. It often took me out of the story.
