Warrior Princess Assassin by Brigid Kemmerer
Emotional, character-driven, and utterly addictive
Warrior Princess Assassin is easily one of my top reads of the summer—a sweeping romantasy full of tension, magic, and impossible choices. From the first chapter, I was completely hooked and could not put it down. Brigid Kemmerer’s adult debut delivers on every promise: slow burn romance, political stakes, and three incredibly compelling characters whose chemistry is off the charts.
Jory, Ky, and Asher feel like three parts of one whole, each one bringing out something different in the others. I cared deeply about all of them, which is rare for me in this kind of dynamic. Usually, I pick a favorite, but not here—they’re better together. The tension and yearning between them was so well crafted, layered with distrust, attraction, and shared purpose. Yes, the romance is slow burn, but it’s laced with sparks from the start, and the plot never loses momentum. The pacing is tight, with a short in-world timeframe that makes the instant connection between characters feel believable, especially given their backstories and the high-stakes circumstances.
I appreciated how character-driven the story was, while still maintaining a steady sense of danger and forward motion. Ky’s fire magic, Jory’s family secrets, and Asher’s ties to the Hunter’s Guild all feed into the plot in meaningful ways. There’s betrayal, banter, forced proximity, hidden truths, and yes—plenty of steam. And while this is the first in a trilogy, it doesn’t leave you on a brutal cliffhanger. The ending lands in a satisfying spot while still setting the stage for what’s next.
Emotionally intense and compulsively readable, Warrior Princess Assassin left me desperate for the next installment. I’m all in on the Braided Fate series.
