Series: A Public Relations Novel, Book 2
UNEXPECTED is a contemporary romance that follows on from book 1 in the Public Relations series, UNDISCLOSED. Amidst the strenuous challenges of a competitive political campaign and Mac’s never-ending family drama, Mac and Gwen’s world is once again upended by the surprise of an unplanned pregnancy…
If you enjoyed UNDISCLOSED, then you absolutely have to take a look to find out what happens next in Mac and Gwen’s lives!
Just as Mac and I have found a sort of routine in our unorthodox relationship, our world is rocked with shocking news—I’m pregnant. Not exactly ideal timing, given how busy the firm is on this high-stakes Presidential campaign, not to mention Mac’s tenuous new connection with our son. As we deal with all these complications, I’m learning how to compromise with Mac so he can be a bigger part of our children’s lives—and despite my efforts, I’m falling in love with him. But when I discover Mac’s been keeping huge secrets of his own, I begin to realize how precarious our relationship really is…and now I have to protect my heart at all cost.
One blurry photo of a blue plus sign is all it takes to throw my life in turmoil. I’m already struggling with doubt about fatherhood, consumed with fears that I’ll turn out just like my old man. I’m determined not to let my newfound family down, though. But when campaign scandals start hitting too close to home, I’m suddenly faced with important decisions about my future with my family, my career, and Gwen.
“Okay.” Tristan nods, his shoulders relaxing just a little. He isn’t exactly happy about getting a new sibling, but that’s probably too much to hope for this soon anyway. At least he’s talking to me now. As long as we have that, we can figure the rest out as we go. Or at least, I hope that’s the case. It’s pretty much the same approach I’m taking with his mother, with only limited success, so what the hell do I know?
“Do you have any other questions? Anything else you want to talk about?”
“I just don’t understand why you want to have another baby.”
How am I supposed to explain that to a ten-year-old? Especially when we didn’t plan this? All the sappy shit people say in books and movies doesn’t really apply to our particular situation. It’s too simple, too trite. And I can’t very well tell him the truth. Son, it was an accident, but then we decided to keep the baby because…I don’t know why, we just did. Yeah, no, I can’t say that. “I, uh… I mean… I think maybe you’ll understand when you’re older.”
“I know about sex, Dad.”
My brain short circuits because he’s giving me a serious, somewhat disdainful look. Like I’m an idiot for thinking he didn’t know when that isn’t even what I was talking about. “Right, of course,” I stammer before trying again. “But I wasn’t talking about the how, I was talking about the why. There are a lot of different reasons adults might decide to have a baby and it’s all kind of complicated. I’m not sure I know how to explain it.”
“I’ll ask Mom.” Tristan nods decisively, certain Gwen will have the answer. She probably will.
