The Back-up Plan by Matilda Martel

Matilda Martel delivers a steamy, emotional instant connection novella that had me rooting for the heroine every step of the way. The Back-Up Plan is a story about breaking toxic cycles, rediscovering self-worth, and finding love that shows up and stays.

Betsy is a successful architect who’s built an incredible career but struggles to build healthy boundaries in her personal life. For years, she’s been stuck in a painful loop with Devon—her college boyfriend turned “just friends” with benefits. Devon only comes around when it’s convenient for him, offering crumbs of affection while keeping Betsy tethered to his ego. He’s the guy who always has an excuse and never shows up when it counts.

Enter Conor.

From the moment Betsy meets him when he is looking for an architect, the chemistry is undeniable—but what makes their connection shine is how emotionally safe it feels. Conor is everything Devon isn’t: attentive, steady, and proud of Betsy’s success. He celebrates her wins, listens when she needs support, and treats her like the main character in her own love story. Even in the short amount of time they have known each other. Their relationship grows naturally and believably, making their heat and heart feel earned.

I really appreciated that Martel didn’t shy away from showing the messy, realistic emotions that come with letting go of someone who’s been a constant… even a toxic one. Betsy’s friends, Della and Liana, offer that tough-love friendship dynamic that romance readers love when calling her out but still cheering her on.

There’s a darker thread woven through the story as Devon’s behavior turns obsessive, and I’ll admit—I was nervous the epilogue might leave that unresolved. Martel closes that arc, but I felt like it needed a little more attention.

While The Back-Up Plan is not in the taboo world than some of Martel’s previous works reside, the emotional depth and chemistry make up for it. It’s proof that she can write just as powerfully in the realm of contemporary romance as she can in her spicier, more forbidden tales.

This one earns a solid 3.5 stars from me—a fast, fiery read. If you love stories where the heroine finally chooses herself (and gets the devoted, protective hero she deserves), The Back-Up Plan absolutely belongs on your TBR.
