Favorite quote: “Men. Can’t live with them. Can’t run them over with a Buick without raising suspicion.”

Maggie Preston’s Sex and Insensibility is an absolute delight. Going into it, I wasn’t sure what to expect as this was my first read by Maggie Preston. At first, I didn’t think I would like this book since it’s written in third person, a writing perspective that I have a great deal connecting with which typically results in me not loving a book. With Sex and Insensibility, that was not the case. Once I read Chapter One, I was hooked.

Sex and Insensibility is a small town, second chance romantic comedy. Lara, the heroine, is under investigation while the authorities determine the cause of death for her ex-husband. Everyone is pretty certain he died before Lara ran him over with her loathed Buick while he was trying to dig up her prized camellia bush. The day after her husband’s death, Lara discovers her bad-boy, motorcycle riding, high school love has moved in next door. Embracing her inner rebel, Lara is delighted to rekindle a romance with Will until she learns he is working to destroy her bookstore in pursuit of his construction project.

Lara is learning to navigate life on her own and embrace the person she truly is after divorcing her ex-husband and living in the shadow of her family’s expectations. Will has returned to town after over a decade away to complete a project that is critical for his construction company. The conflict between the construction site and the store’s livelihood pits Lara against both Will and her family.

I truly loved this book and wound up purchasing book two and three in the series to continue reading. Sex and Insensibility has something for everyone. There is murder mystery, second chance romance, family feud, and a difficult situation that creates tension between hero and heroine. I have not laughed out loud this much while reading a book ever. Maggie Preston did a fantastic job with her debut novel.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a read to brighten their day as the laughs stay with you long after the book is finished. I am still laughing about the cause of death upon the murder mystery being solved.
