Nikolai Vetrov is what mafia book boyfriends are mad of. He is intense and possessive.

Abigail, the female lead, endures unimaginable trauma. The author does do a respectable job of portraying the brutality of the act without resorting to explicit detail. I am not 100% sold it was need on page, the feelings and emotions could have been share with the scene in a different way. The impact of this trauma leaves Abigail shattered, adrift, and unsure of how to proceed in life.

The authors writes Nikolai in a way the shows his desire to take care of her but also respects that some big has happened and he need to allow her to lead.  Gradually he helps her rebuild the shattered pieces of her identity.
