Avril and Steele met when her best friend became involved with his brother, but at the time she had a boyfriend, so Steele didn’t do anything about the feelings he was having for her. They re-meet when another dragon shifter and friend Venus hides out with Avril. They have a short fling, and then go their separate ways. This book opens weeks later when Avril discovers that she is pregnant with Steele’s baby. He is excited because he has had an attraction to her since the moment he laid eyes on her but was unwilling to make any moves because she was taken and live apart.
Avril has a lot of hang-ups from the way in which she was raised as well as her past relationships. She doesn’t have any intentions of hiding the baby from Steele, but she also has no intentions of becoming more than co-parents. Steele does everything he can to get Avril to trust in him and his feelings, but it is not an easy task. She doesn’t believe him that he is there for her as well as the baby. And when he finds out he is a dragon shifter and she has to move, that doesn’t go over well at all.
There were moments that I didn’t love Avril, but as Johnston delves deeper into her past, you can understand why she has the issues and faults that she does. I really enjoyed the dynamic between these two and love how hard Steel works to show Avril his worth and his truths. You do not need to read the first 2 books of this series, but you are doing yourself a disservice if you do not.
