World’s Okayest Oracle (Reluctantly) Seeks Demon by Olivia Dade
I had so much fun with Zomromcom that I knew I would be back for the next book in Olivia Dade’s Supernatural Entanglements series. And while World’s Okayest Oracle (Reluctantly) Seeks Demon didn’t work quite as well for me, I am absolutely still invested in this wonderfully weird world. Especially after that epilogue!
The beginning was really strong. Dade does a great job dropping us back into this supernatural world without overwhelming us with reminders from the previous book. The humor is still there, the world is delightfully ridiculous, and Gwen and Hugh are both incredibly likable. Gwen just wants cheese and to be a moderately successful oracle. Hugh is a demon who is completely gone for her. What’s not to enjoy?
Where this lost me a little was the romance.
The majority of the story takes place over an incredibly short period of time, and I am just not an instalove girl. Gwen and Hugh do have history, but their original encounter happened twenty years ago and lasted such a short time that I had trouble buying it as the foundation for how quickly their relationship develops.
I also wanted Hugh to work a little harder for Gwen. She considers what happened after their first meeting one of the most humiliating experiences of her life, and while her reaction to Hugh makes sense for her character, personally? Sir, I would have required some groveling.
That said, Dade writes both characters so well that I still found myself rooting for them. Hugh might be almost too perfect, but he’s sweet, devoted, and completely down bad for Gwen, which certainly helps his case.
The supernatural storyline also gets increasingly wild, and by the time we were heading into the underworld, I discovered there apparently IS a limit to how far I can suspend my disbelief. Who knew? Zombies? Sure. Demons? Absolutely. The underworld? Apparently that’s where my brain decided to file a complaint.
Overall, this was fun, funny, sexy, and packed with the wonderfully strange paranormal energy I’ve come to expect from this series. The romance moved too quickly for me to become completely invested, but I really enjoyed Gwen and Hugh individually and I’m still very much along for the ride.
Three stars from me, but absolutely put me down for Book Three.
