I was told by trust book friends to read this author and so of course I did. I am NOT disappointed in that choice at all. Zoe Blake writes a dynamic story that you do not want to put down. Barone is a man that knows what he wants and who he wants. Even when he thinks that it’s wrong, but that does not stop him. Amara is a woman who knows her place, and it isn’t with Barone. Though he tries at every turn to prover her wrong.
Blake doesn’t create a simpering heroine that won’t stand up for herself. Yes, she gives into the moment more times than not, but at the same time she is strong in her convictions. Barone is a man who refuses to hear the word no. Thus, the TW of the non-con/dub con.
These two characters are dynamic together as well as apart. Barone recognizes right away that Amara is more than what she seems and is capable of more than what she has been given. He wants her to shine, and he wants her to do it with him beside her. Even as they both fight it. Him with feelings he shouldn’t have, and her with the fact that she feels out of place with him.
There are overarching themes that seem as though they will carry on between the sons of Barone’s books, but we shall see. If you love a game of cat and mouse, and the chase is something you enjoy reading about then this is the book for you.
It’s has maifa-esque ideals without being truly mafia. But a strong family dynamic and a cast of characters that you can’t help but want to know more about. This series is already starting to be a must read, and I can’t wait to see where Blake takes us next.
