A forbidden romance with a side of angst and oh so much drama!
Single Dad Cohen is do the very best he can. He has raised his younger sister Georgia due to deadbeat parents. He is now the dad of sweet Noah after his ex girlfriend dcided she did not want to be a mom even before Noah was born. Cohen has kept his head down and worked hard. Opening his own bar The Twisted Fox after years of working as a bartender. Cohen might be one of the nicest heroes I have ever read. He is such a good guy trying his best.
Jamie is the sister of Cohen’s ex. She has not seen or spoken to Cohen in five years since her sister walked out on her newborn baby. Jamie is shocked when Cohen and Noah are her patients in her ED. Jamie is a harder character to like. She is a bit of a door mat when it comes to her family. She allows them to push her into choices that are not what she wants. I also felt like her character arc was incomplete. She did not ever stand up for herself and speak the words she needed to. She also forgave her parents very easily in the end after they help perpetuate some the heartache she experienced from her sister’s behaviors.
I was also very frustrated with Jamie and Cohen’s back in forth once the obstacles of her family came into play. It felt like unnecessary angst and did not resolve much. I would have rather seen those 50 pages of angst spent on Jamie standing up for herself and hashing out her feelings with her parents or walking away from there. There was never a moment of truly being settled between the Jamie and Cohen. Because of the slow burn aspect of the novel, it felt like bam they were together and pump the breaks we have a problem with in 2 pages.
For a first in series the author did a great job of introducing the world and characters we will see later in the series. I did think that she kind of has already told us who is going to end up together, so I am not in a hurry to read the next books in the series since she did a good job of laying it out for us in this book.
Overall, this is a well written book. I liked the stylistic choices the author made. The characters are complex with out being confusing. This story had its drama, but most of the time the drama made sense with a believable resolution.
