Cursed City by Kate Golden

Stronger pacing, richer world building, another gut-punch ending.

Cursed City is a stronger follow up to Half City, and I found myself much more engaged with Viv’s growth in this installment.

Viv learns to accept her abilities in ways that felt genuine rather than forced, and some of the concerns I had about her relationship with Reid in the first book were validated here. I won’t say more because of spoilers, but I appreciated how that storyline played out. Teaming up with Deacon to rescue Reid raises the tension even further, and I enjoyed getting a closer look at the deviant world through characters who feel like individuals rather than broad archetypes.

The found family continues to be a highlight of this series. Sophia, Elliott, Peter, and the new friends introduced here bring plenty of warmth and banter to the story, balancing out the darker, higher stakes plot. More secrets come to light, and the world building feels richer as a result.

This book ends on another major cliffhanger, and now I’m definitely ready to see what happens next.
