Lyric has been in Stetson’s life for a really long time, but mostly in the periphery because she is the best friend of his little sister Isla and a lot younger. That hasn’t kept Lyric from crushing on Stetson her whole life. Then things change and they take a step forward. Or at least Lyric thought so…. This book opens six weeks after that one step forward and three steps with life changing news.
I am loving this series, and the family dynamics in this book. The Barron family have issues and emotional upheavals in the way in which they deal with them. Stetson is a man that wants to create his own path in the world but is held back by what he thinks are important parts of life. As an adult, he is seeing that some of the choices he made weren’t the correct ones. There is a lot of growth in him through this book, and I love the fact that Lyric calls him out on things. EYs, there is a moment that role is reversed but she truly shows him that while yes she did what he is accusing her of, it was only a matter of time before that truth came to fruition.
Marie Johnston writes exceptionally flawed characters, but they aren’t so flawed that they aren’t capable of growing and changing when the right person shows them, they should. This series just keeps getting better and I can’t wait to see where it goes next. You do NOT need to read the previous books in this series to know and understand the story, but you should.
