Wicked Onyx by Debbie Cassidy
Where ancient secrets and cursed bloodlines collide at a deadly academy.
Wicked Onyx is a strong start to a dark academia fantasy that pulled me into the brutal world of Nightsbridge Academy almost immediately. The setting carries real weight from the opening pages. The story blends familiar genre elements with a darker, more unforgiving edge. Cursed bloodlines and ancient secrets buried beneath the academy shape the early stakes and keep them rising.
Anamaya “Ana” Onyx is a compelling lead. She has been stripped of her magic and carries the burden of her family’s disgraced past. That history fuels her determination to uncover the truth behind her bloodline. I liked that this first book stays focused on plot and discovery. At the same time, it introduces romantic tension. Love interests are clearly present, but the romance remains secondary and leaves room to grow later.
The magic system is well set up and easy to follow. It feels grounded while still offering its own twists. This is especially true in how different creatures and factions operate within the world. The academy’s role as a line of defense against Horrors and Echoes adds constant tension. It also gives the story a strong sense of purpose.
The found family elements were a highlight for me. Ana’s friendships with Clary, Dori, and Benedict bring warmth and balance to an otherwise harsh environment. The side characters feel distinct and meaningful.
One central mystery reaches a satisfying resolution by the end of the book. However, the larger story clearly continues. As a result, the cliffhanger works well. It closes this installment while setting up bigger revelations to come. Overall, Wicked Onyx lays a solid foundation for The Veritas Legacy. I am very much looking forward to continuing the series.
