Topic: Pride and Prejudice
Book Released: 1813
History of P& P: Austen began writing the novel after staying at Goodnestone Park in Kent with her brother Edward and his wife in 1796. It was originally titled First Impressions, and was written between October 1796 and August 1797. Austen made significant revisions to the manuscript for First Impressions between 1811 and 1812. The book copy rights of the book were sold to Thomas Egerton. The novel was originally published anonymously, as were all of Austen’s novels. However, whereas her first published novel, Sense and Sensibility was presented as being written “by a Lady,” Pride and Prejudice was attributed to “the Author of Sense and Sensibility“. This began to consolidate a conception of Austen as an author, albeit anonymously.
Movie Released: 2005
Staring: Keira Knightley stars in the lead role of Elizabeth Bennet, while Matthew Macfadyen plays her romantic interest Mr. Darcy.
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” “… and they were both ever sensible of the warmest gratitude towards the persons who, by bringing her into Derbyshire, had been the means of uniting them.”
