Crown of War and Shadow by J.R. Ward

A cursed outcast and a ruthless mercenary cross a demon-filled wasteland—bound by a dangerous bargain and a slow-burning attraction that could doom them both.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Crown of War and Shadow was an engaging and immersive dark romantasy that I found incredibly hard to put down. From the compelling characters to the richly built world, this story pulled me in from the very beginning.

This was actually my first time reading J.R. Ward, and it definitely won’t be my last. The world-building is phenomenal, with vivid imagery and a setting that feels both expansive and dangerous. The story explores themes of fate versus choice, trust and betrayal, secrecy, and survival, all woven into a high-stakes adventure.

Sorrel is a fascinating heroine—an outcast burdened with abilities that others fear, yet forced to step into a much bigger destiny. Her journey across the Badlands with Merc, a brooding and mysterious mercenary, creates a strong forced-proximity dynamic that adds tension and intrigue throughout the story. The twists kept me guessing, and I appreciated that several developments caught me by surprise.

While the romance is more of a slow-burn subplot within the larger fantasy narrative, the chemistry between Sorrel and Merc adds an extra layer of emotional depth to the story.

Overall, this was a gripping dark fantasy with strong characters, intriguing magic, and a beautifully crafted world. It even gave me some Lord of the Rings–style adventure vibes at times. I’m excited to see where this series goes next.
