One of the best parts of reading romantic suspense is the “meet cutes” are often intense and let’s just say Josie got herself into quite the jam while on an “op” in pitch black dark of the night of the Salish Sea between Seattle and Canada and Finn and his captain were there to rescue her. She knew enough to not ask questions but that certainly didn’t mean she didn’t have them. She was one of the best NSA agents and a lead intelligence specialist for Jameson security force. That is actually what I loved most about Josie- she so very clearly is very smart. But underneath all of her training, intelligence she is still a woman that loves her father, her friends, wants to find love and will do what she can to protect others.
And then there is Finn, who is actually very complicated. As readers we knew that Finn skirted the law; he was really a good guy- his family was his crew Marcus and Connie. The way he made the bulk of his money was maybe not legal but that came from years of fending for himself and having to do what he needed to do to survive while that doesn’t make it right- it certainly is a reason.
Josie and Finn had immediate chemistry and while neither of them was expecting to find love on the water that night they couldn’t ignore their draw to one another. There was a lot working against these two between their jobs and some friends doubting their connection. And lets just say these two lit the pages on fire!
The emotional level in this book was very high- the tension on the page was palpable. Bennett did such an amazing job ratcheting up the suspense and tension we could almost feel that the bad guys were becoming increasingly angry and anxious. That wasn’t the only tension- there was pressure from Finn’s crew because being in the crosshairs of the Russians was not the place to be. You know a book is amazing when you pull up maps while you listen so you can track where the action is happening. Erin Mallon and Sean Masters really did such a phenomenal job bringing Josie McAams and Finn Marlowe to life- so if you are an audiobook reader I cannot recommend listening to this one! Another high stakes hit from Sawyer Bennett and I cannot wait for what is next up in the Jameson Seattle series.
