Road Trip with a Vampire by Jenna Levine

A witch with secrets, a vampire with amnesia, and a cross-country trip full of banter and charm.

Road Trip with a Vampire is the third (and final) book in Jenna Levine’s series, but it works perfectly well as a standalone—I jumped in here without reading the earlier books and had no trouble following along.

The setup is immediately fun: a witch with secrets and a vampire with amnesia pile into a car for a cross-country trip full of banter, awkward moments, and slow-burn chemistry. I wasn’t sure how the memory loss angle would play out, but it actually worked really well and gave Peter’s character an endearing vulnerability. He’s sweet (and swoony in that slightly bewildered vampire way), and Zelda is sharp, guarded, and layered in a way that made learning about her past genuinely interesting. Together, they had some laugh-out-loud funny moments that balanced nicely with the softer, more romantic ones.

Tropes and Pacing

The tropes here are familiar in the best way—one bed, close proximity, instant attraction, and a hero who falls first (even if he doesn’t quite realize it). All of that worked for me. Where the story wobbled was more in the execution of the journey itself. For a road trip romance, I expected a little more action during the actual travel and from the external conflict—sometimes the pacing dragged and I felt like scenes lingered longer than they needed to. At over 400 pages, the story could have been a bit tighter. I still found it enjoyable, but it didn’t fully deliver on the momentum promised in the premise.

Overall, this is a quirky, funny, and sweet paranormal romance that’s light on angst and heavier on charm. If you like the idea of a vampire in yoga shorts, a witch reluctantly opening up, and a relationship that leans on humor and tenderness more than high drama, this is worth picking up. For me, it was a fun read that kept me turning the pages, even if I wanted a little more punch along the way.
